U3A GENETICS = THE SCIENCE OF INHERITANCE
This course will be in 3 parts, each probably lasting one term.
  1. Will include topics such genes and chromosomes and how they control how the body works and how they are inherited from generation to generation according to  the laws of inheritance
  2. DNA and how it provides a genetic code, how it can be changed (mutation), DNA fingerprinting, genetic modification by humans
  3. How genetics affects and explains evolution, the issues of genetic engineering and reproductive cloning.
This is a science course taught by a science teacher who assumes that everyone who signs up knows nothing (most of the information here was discovered long past the time most of us left school). The course is flexible – we can go into more detail if everyone wants to or go off on a tangent if we so desire.
This is a developmental course which means each lesson builds on the one before. It will be part lecture and part  activities  (these are fun) and you may even get homework. You will need pens, a ruler and a note book. This is a great course to excite the neurones to form new pathways, sweep away some of the myths about inheritance and  allow you to speak with some understanding of some of the new technologies.
