The themes follow a five-week cycle of:
- Ancient and Mediaeval History (that is from Year Dot to around 1200),
- Modern History (from around 1200 to recent times),
- Australian History (any period),
- Famous People (and the not-so-famous who have done amazing things)
- Own Choice.
Preparation for each session is not onerous – some people like the discipline of reading various sources then prepare a summary of their topic, while others may simply read an interesting article from a book, the internet or other source, but this is history so the emphasis is on facts and discovering how the past can enlighten our understanding of the present.
Sessions vary according to how many people are in attendance – more people, more topics covered; fewer people, more time for questions and discussion of the topics presented – a win/win situation which guarantees that every session is thought-provoking. The role of the ‘Tutor’ is to ensure that everyone has theopportunity to present their topic and that discussion does not stray too far off track.
