Newsletter January 2016
I hope you all had a great festive season. Many thanks to Robyn who ensured this kicked off in style with our U3A Christmas lunch where there was much positive comment, not least on the delicious and plentiful food. Have you held to your New Year's Resolutions? These, l trust, included your involvement with U3A Broadbeach for as Aristotle said:- "Education is the best provision for old age" Your President and Committee extend our best wishes for 2016 to all members, new and old, and we hope that you will enjoy the opportunities for learning and friendship on offer. Your U3A thrives through active participation and anyone who feels able to extend our course options by tutoring a subject is encouraged to put forward ideas. Equally, those who would like to play a role in the day to day running of the U3A and help in decision making should refer to the AGM details below and the nomination process for Committee positions. Have fun with your learning in 2016. If you have any queries you can always send an email to [email protected] and you will receive a reply as soon as possible. U3A Term Dates Feb 22nd- March 24th April 11th - June 24th July 11th- Sept 16th Oct 4th- Dec 9th U3A Classes- starting February 22nd As ever we will need to be patient regarding class allocation as we are unable to give an exact place for the various classes until after school has commenced and has been going for a couple of weeks. The school administration has to house their own pupils first and then we fit into the blank spaces left behind. We are grateful to Robyn Tucker who will be liaising with the school on our behalf. We are looking to publish the new U3A time table on our website at u3abroadbeach.com as soon as this becomes available. It is anticipated that most of the classes will be held at the same time as last year and also in the same place but we will bring to your attention any changes. Students of all classes which are held "off campus" should contact their tutor to check on arrangements if they have not heard from him / her a week before the U3A term commences. Sign On Day If you have not yet enrolled for this year you are welcome to attend the Sign On Day being held in the Hospitality Room of Merrimac State High School 10 am till noon on Friday 12th February. |
Griffith Lectures "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire" - William Butler Yeats Following last year's very successful programme with increasing attendance numbers, l am pleased to say we have been advised that the 2016 Friday afternoon lecture dates are as follows 11th March, 13th May, 8th July, 9th Sept and 11th November. Further details will be given in due course but anyone interested can mark these dates in their diary in readiness. Other Matters Tutors Barbara McCarthy has retired as our Computer tutor and, therefore, we will not be running any classes in PC use. We thank Barbara very much for her able assistance over the past years and wish her all the very best for the future. We are very lucky to have so many tutors who are all volunteers giving their time freely; l am sure they will continue to benefit from everyone's support, consideration and cooperation. Without them we are nothing, Possible New Course We have been approached by a new member who is interested in running a course on ‘Coping with Stress in your Changing World”.
