Broadbeach U3A October Newsletter
"It is always the season for the old to learn." Aeschylus 525BC - 456BC Quotes from the Ancient Greeks remind us not only how wise they were but, if their names are anything to go by, how good they must have been at spelling. Roll on 2018 Enrolment for 2018 commences on 13th November so please ensure you enrol for next year either on Mondays at the U3A office at Merrimac High School between 10am and 12 noon during school term or by post to PO Box 526 Pacific Fair 4218. The fee is $50 for a single member and $60 for two people at the same address. Please supply a completed application form with boxes ticked for your desired subjects - this can be found on our web site or provided at our office. If you miss enrolling before the end of this term there will as usual be the long-stop of our Signing On Day that will be held next year on Friday 2nd February. Party Time Following the success of the Christmas in July Party at the Darcy Arms, the proper Christmas Party is scheduled for Wednesday November 29th at this same venue, but at a lower negotiated price of 30$. Well done Robyn Tucker, who will be sending out further details and your invitation in due course. An End and a Beginning Please note that our U3A term ends on Friday December 1st and Term One 2018 starts on Monday 19th February. Treasuring U3A Our current Treasurer, Joe Reisenberger, who has given us such valuable assistance for 4 years, will not be continuing in this role after the next AGM and thus we are looking for someone to come forward to take up this baton. I should like to assure you that you do not need to be an accountant as our affairs are very simple. There are plenty of rewards in playing this central role, not least seeing the joy in the eyes of those receiving reimbursement for legitimate expenditure. Please express your interest by emailing [email protected] so that a smooth handover may be put in place. Weekend Warriors Don Roberts, another U3A treasure, and my personal role model, has given our U3A great support over the years. He has written and produced another fine and humour packed book - "Weekend Warriors - the Games We Played". Illustrated by no less a cartoonist than 'Paul "Bluey' Mills, this is a must buy at 20$ for anyone interested in sport as it is really played and life as it is really lived. Rumour has it that Don still plays a mean game of table tennis. If you would like a copy please email Don at [email protected] and he will help you get it. I already have mine. Wanted While on the subject of books, we have received a request from one of our French class members to ask if anyone has an unwanted used copy of "Oxford French: Take Off In French 2008". If so then please email [email protected]. |
Peace Dancing
I am pleased to report that this new course has got off on the right foot and been very well received by attendees who have found it a most relaxing and enjoyable experience. There is confidence that this class will continue past this current term. Why not give it a gentle whirl? The course description is on the website under Class Notes. Anyone interested in opting for these classes should contact Judith Keller by phoning her on 0448188937or emailing her at [email protected]. Cultural Awareness for Travellers We are delighted to announce a new course that will commence next term to be run by our "Poet Lorikeet", Peter Meggit whose Hawaiian shirts have made him something of a style icon for those of us in the choir.. What is less well known is that he has more degrees than you can shake a stick at and that he has delivered a series of most stimulating courses at Bond University on the above topic. We are very fortunate that he has offered to lead a class for us commencing next term and its goal will be to teach the knowledge and skills relevant to us as world travellers. It will be essentially a journey of cultural understanding. A fuller description of the course is given on the website under Class Notes. This promises to be a fascinating course giving plenty of opportunity for you to share your own experiences. Those interested in participating should email Peter ([email protected]). iPad Rides Again Calling all you iPad users out there. We need a few more people to make it worth while running further iPad courses this U3A year: Currently we offer : * Getting the most from your iPad - Email, Internet Browsing, Apps and iPad tips and tricks * Advanced iPad - Managing your photos using an iPad and Facebook Both of these courses will be run over 3 sessions of 2 hours each session. A course requirement is that you have an iPad or iPad mini. Please email Linda Crittenden ([email protected]) if you are interested stating which course you would like to attend. Tutors for New Courses We are always delighted when members volunteer to lead new courses. If there is anyone who would like to volunteer to tutor a new course for the New Year please let us know as soon as possible. It is much better if we can advertise new courses from the commencement of the year when members are considering their options. If we know now, the new class can be included in the list on the enrolment form. Please email [email protected] with your proposal. Hosting U3A members during the Commonwealth Games We have been approached by U3A Queensland Network to see if any of our members would be interested in providing accommodation to fellow U3A members from other parts of Australia who want to come to the Commonwealth Games:- "Your U3A branch members reside in or relatively near the Games locations, and may have already considered the opportunities for “Home Hosting” Games visitors or volunteers. There has been plenty of publicity about earnings from rental incomes during this period. However, getting involved with AirBnB or letting to unknowns generates some trepidation. |
A suggestion has been made that U3A members with the potential and willingness to “host” or “billet” during the Games might be happier doing so for U3A members from other branches in Queensland or Australia who want to attend the Games. Accommodating like-minded people from the same organization has far more appeal.
Costs for “Hosting” to be set / negotiated by those getting involved.. This will not be driven by U3A, we are just hoping to link up our members who can help each other. Contact addresses of those interested will only be forwarded to those U3A branches who may have members interested in seeking accommodation." If you are interested in hosting U3A members please register your interest in the first place by emailing [email protected] so that we will be able to let U3A Queensland Network know whether we have potential hosts. Surviving the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games While on the subject of the Games you may be interested to learn that Gold Coast District Neighbourhood Watch Queensland are running a free forum under the above heading on Tuesday 21 November at 5.30pm at Albert Waterways Community Centre , Cornet Hooker and Sunshine Blvds, Mermaid Waters. The forum will give you the opportunity to learn about the impacts of the Games on your neighbourhood with guest speakers from GOLDOC, Queensland Police Service and City of Gold Coast. RSVP is required- so please register by visiting goldcoastnhw..org or calling 0437 647 128. Web Watching As mentioned in my last newsletter U3A bulk emails sometimes get channelled into people's junk mail so check our website frequently to ensure you do not miss out on important news and information. "Let us never know what old age is. Let us know the happiness time brings, not count the years."
